Betty ColeThe Concise Oxford dictionary definition of a volunteer is ‘a person who spontaneously undertakes a task'. The Collins dictionary describes volunteering as ‘entering service of one's own free will'.

Spontaneity and freedom are the essence of volunteering. Unlike the paid employee, who has to wait for an employer's acceptance, the volunteer has the advantage of seeking out his/her employer.

The choice is, do you stay with the talents you have or step out in a new direction?

There is training for volunteers not only in the fields of chosen work, but how to be a volunteer. Do a Google search with the words ‘Volunteer New Zealand' and you will find websites where volunteer positions are advertised.

Your volunteering does not have to be charity based.

Many organisations in areas such as sporting, leisure, theatre and education are crying out for volunteers to organise their events and help with their paperwork.

You may have played a sport or sung in a choir many years before; offer your services back to them, or strike out anew!

I found my niche four years ago volunteering once weekly for a respite day care centre (much akin to my hospital working life in elderly rehabilitation).

I previously worked with physically disabled people, but now have the challenge of working with dementia clients as well.

Returning to the workforce, I was surprised at how volunteers are regarded as staff.

I was police checked, and asked to sign ethical and privacy agreements. I was told I had all the same privileges as paid staff.

I attend seminars, lectures, courses and staff meetings. I contribute to the programme with a weekly health and safety stint.

As the day programme includes a midday meal, I dine out in company. The ages of my associates (staff and volunteers) range from teens to 70+, so I enjoy a wide range of personalities. Our volunteers are included in the after hours social life of the staff.

I give, but I receive far more in return. My life has changed from one of loneliness to one of fulfilment.

I recommend volunteering as a new beginning to all those who are capable of stepping back into the world.
