Often people providing support for friends or family members don't see themselves as 'carers'.
Caring is something many of us provide as a matter of course, out of a sense of love or duty ... something we have always done for loved ones.
All of us can expect to give or receive support to friends, family members, whanau and aiga during our lives.
In New Zealand there are at least 420,000 carers (Source: Census 2006) and international studies have found that one in four to five of every population has caring responsibilities; this would put the total number of New Zealand carers at around 1 million!
You can learn more about New Zealand carers in the About Us section at the site.
You definitely are not alone! This can be difficult to believe if you feel isolated and alone, and have little chance for social interaction with others.
Often carers enjoy opportunities to meet one another, to learn and share from each other, and for moral support.
During 2010 Carers NZ hopes to offer regional wellbeing and learning events so carers can get together, and receive helpful information. To register interest in an event in your area, please email sara@carers.net.nz or phone (0800) 777 797. We will keep you informed about planning for our regional meet and greets!
