Alzheimers New Zealand provides support and information to all people affected by dementia.
Its 23 Member Organisations throughout New Zealand support people with all types of dementia, their carers, family and whanau.
Every Member Organisation has community or social workers who can provide you with information about services in your area and how to access them.
Local support options may include support groups for carers and others in the family; carer education programmes, day and activity programmes for people with dementia; and sitter and companion services. Contact your local Alzheimers organisation toll-free at (0800) 004 001 to find out what services are available in your area.
At a national level, Alzheimers NZ supports the work of Member Organisations and represents people with dementia, their carers and families through advocacy, national public awareness, policy advice and an information resource centre and library.
Alzheimers NZ also produces information sheets and booklets about a wide range of topics.
These include communicating with a person with dementia, continence advice, legal matters, carer feelings, caring for the carer, and understanding behaviours.
All are available free at the Alzheimers New Zealand website www.alzheimers.org.nz Or contact your local organisation on (0800) 004 001 if you would like them to be sent to you.
Most regions also offer carer support groups and activities. Call (0800) 004 001 to find out what is available in your area.
Alzheimers NZ publishes a popular information booklet containing helpful advice for carers, families and whanau.
The booklet has assisted many New Zealand families following a diagnosis of a family member with dementia.
Recently updated and reprinted, it is available for just $5. Call (0800) 004 001 free to be sent a copy, or download it from the website http://www.alzheimers.org.nz/
